One Small Chip, One Big Difference

Today is National Check the Chip Day—a crucial reminder that could make the difference between finding your beloved pet and never seeing them again. At Big Dog Ranch Rescue, we’ve witnessed firsthand the heartbreak of lost pets and the joy of their reunification thanks to microchips.

Every year, thousands of pets go missing, and the heartbreaking reality is that many never find their way back home. But there’s a simple, effective solution that can change this—microchipping. This tiny chip can make a big difference, ensuring that your pet has the best chance of being reunited with you if they ever get lost.

At Big Dog Ranch Rescue, microchipping plays a crucial role in reuniting lost pets with their owners. When a stray animal comes into our care, the first step is scanning for a microchip. If the chip is registered and up-to-date, we can quickly contact the owner and facilitate a reunion.

Why Microchipping is Essential:

  • Permanent Identification: Unlike collars and tags that can be lost or removed, a microchip provides a permanent form of identification that stays with your pet.

  • Reunification: Pets with microchips are much more likely to be reunited with their owners. According to studies, dogs with microchips are more than twice as likely to be returned to their owners.

  • Security for Pet Owners: Knowing your pet has a microchip offers peace of mind, ensuring that if they ever wander away, there’s a strong chance they’ll make it back home.

Steps to Take for Microchipping:

  • Register the Chip: After microchipping, it’s crucial to register your contact information with a national pet recovery database. This ensures that if your pet is found, your contact details can be accessed.

  • Keep Information Up-to-Date: Have you moved or changed your phone number? Make sure to update your contact information with the microchip registry. An outdated microchip is as ineffective as having no chip at all.

  • Regularly Check the Chip: During your pet’s annual vet visit, make sure ask to have the microchip scanned to ensure it’s still functioning and registered correctly. Or go online and update your contact information with the microchip registry.
