A Guide To Keeping Your Pets Safe Through The Storm

Hurricane season is here and can be unpredictable and stressful for everyone, including our pets. Ensuring your dog’s safety and comfort should be a priority as storms approach. By taking a few simple steps to prepare in advance, you can protect your pet from the dangers and anxiety that often come with severe weather. Whether it’s having the right supplies or creating a safe space at home, being proactive will give both you and your pet peace of mind throughout the season.

Prepare a Pet Emergency Kit

  • Food and Water: at least a 7 day supply of food and bottled water.

  • Medications: Any medications your pet may need, stored in a waterproof container.

  • Collar and ID Tags: Make sure your dog is wearing up-to-date ID tags and has a secure collar.

  • Leash and Carrier: In case you need to evacuate, make sure you have a leash and a carrier on hand for transportation.

  • Comfort Items: Include a favorite toy or blanket to reduce anxiety during the storm.

  • Waste Bags and Cleaning Supplies: You’ll need to manage your dog’s waste in case you’re stuck inside for extended periods

Stay Calm and Reassuring

Dogs can sense your anxiety, so try to remain as calm as possible. Speak to them in a soothing tone, and stay close to provide comfort and reassurance.

Create a Safe Space Indoors

  • Designate a Safe Room: Choose a room in your home away from windows and doors where your dog can feel safe and secure.

  • Comfort Zone: Place their bed, toys, and food in this area to help keep them calm during the storm.

  • Crate Training: If your dog is crate-trained, consider using their crate for added security during the most intense parts of the storm.

Never Leave Your Dog Behind- Plan For Evacuation

  • If you’re evacuating, take your dog with you! Leaving them behind in a hurricane is dangerous - they may become injured or lost in the chaos.

Always make arrangements to keep your pets with you, even if you think it’s only a short-term situation.

Stay Informed, Stay Prepared, and most importantly, Stay Safe.
