10 Ways To Keep Your Dog Safe on july 4th
Fourth of July is one of the most exciting holidays of the year. From the fireworks and festivities to delicious food and spending time with friends and family, Independence Day is perfect for kicking back and relaxing.
However, the loud noises and excitement can be overwhelming for our dogs.
Here are 10 ways to keep your dog calm on July 4th!
Keep your dog inside during the fireworks.
Dogs have a tendency to run from perceived danger. Keep your dog inside the home to ensure that they do not run away if they become spooked. If you must leave your dog in the yard, make sure that all gates and exits are securely fastened.
Create a safe space.
Prior to the holiday, create a safe haven for your dog that provides a sense of comfort and security. We recommend a small, enclosed space filled with blankets and items that provide comfort such as pillows and treats.
Play soothing music.
Just like humans, dogs find music relaxing. Playing soothing music also helps muffle the sound of loud fireworks! Find a playlist of soothing music on Youtube, Spotify, or Apple Music that you can leave on during the fireworks show.
Make sure that your dog is microchipped.
Be prepared. Make sure your dog is microchipped just in case they do escape.
Take your dog on lots of walks!
Walk off some of your dog’s energy by taking him or her on several long walks prior to the fireworks.
Try a dog calming vest or ThunderShirt.
If your pup is extra sensitive to loud noises, you may want to invest in a dog calming vest or thunder shirt. You can find a thunder shirt from Chewy here.
Try a calming medicine or canine CBD solution.
If you feel your dog may benefit from some sort of soothing medicine, there are lots of options available to help ease their anxiety. Always consult with your dog’s Veterinarian before administering any medications.
Do not feed your dog any of the human food.
It may be tempting to share your delicious Independence Day food with your pup, but allowing them to partake in the July 4th treats can cause them to have bad bouts of pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, and more.
Keep all alcohol out of reach of your animals.
We all want to have a good time for the 4th but make sure any alcohol is out of reach of your animals.
Give your dog lots of attention leading up to the festivities.
You can still let your dog get in on the fun by giving them a little extra play time and attention. If they allow it, dress them up as a patriotic puppy!
We hope you and your pup have a safe and happy 4th of July!
