For the Love of Dogs

For the Love of Dogs

I’ve always loved dogs. But before we got Blew I loved them in that semi-detached way that many dogless people do.  I admit that I did view some of my dog-obsessed friends a little skeptically (in fact I thought they were barking mad as they gaily welcomed beast # 5 into their homes and lovingly knitted dog sweaters.) I couldn’t really understand their passion for their pets, which seemed at times to exceed the affection they displayed for the other members of their families (like husbands and children) and I certainly...

Dog rescue named most improved in Rachael Ray $1OOK Challenge

Article by Nadia SoRocka (nsorocka@tribune.com) Published in the Royal Palm Forum on 12/12/2012 Big Dog Ranch Rescue in Wellington has been able to save about 300 to 500 dogs each year since it opened in 2006. But when the staff and volunteers took on the 2012 American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Rachael Ray $lOOK Challenge, they had no idea how many dogs they would be able to rescue. The answer is 582 in three months. “We increased our adoption percentage by 300 percent,” the rescue’s vice president,...

Riki & Jerome Shaw Lead the Donor Pack at Big Dog Ranch Rescue

There’s no doubt that angels are watching over us at Big Dog Ranch Rescue and this month two of them made their presence known in a VERY BIG WAY!  Ricki & Jerome Shaw recently donated $100,000 to Big Dog Ranch Rescue to build a quarantine kennel for our dogs.  All of us at the Ranch are humbled, overwhelmed and and beyond grateful! To give you a little background, a quarantine kennel is a very necessary stop for the dogs on their way into our shelter.  They stay there when they first arrive so we can assess their temperament and...

Donate to Help Our Girl Silver

You want to talk about a rough start in life?  Before we met Silver, she got hit by a car and her front leg was badly injured so they were going to euthanize her.  Big Dog Ranch stepped in and saved her life.  That was the first good thing that happened to her… but she still had a long road ahead.  Unfortunately her leg had gone far too long without medical attention so it had to be amputated.  Many dogs get around on three legs, but a missing front leg is tougher than a hind leg.  After watching her for a bit we noticed that her...

Starving Dog

Last week, I heard that a Weimaraner, named Sugar, had arrived at the Ranch so I went out to pay her a visit.  Sindy, one of our long-time employees and wonderful volunteers, greeted me with a sad face and led me to her kennel.  When I peeked through the door, I saw a skeleton of a dog looking back at me.  I looked at Sindy and we both started to cry.  My guess is that when Sugar is healthy, she’ll weigh about 65 pounds.  The day she arrived, she was 35 pounds.  I often wonder how someone could do this to an innocent animal. Today...
